What is Ethereum?
Ethereum, live since 2015, is the largest smart-contract platform — a blockchain that runs programmable applications rather than just payments. Its currency, ether, pays for computation (gas) and secures the network through proof-of-stake, which replaced mining in the 2022 Merge. Most stablecoins, DeFi protocols and NFT markets either live on Ethereum or copy its ERC-20 token standard, making ETH the second-largest crypto asset after Bitcoin.
How Nigerians actually use ETH
Ethereum touches Nigerians in two ways. Traders and long-term holders treat ETH as the market’s second blue chip, a step up in risk from BTC but still a serious asset for hedging naira weakness. Builders matter too: Nigeria has one of Africa’s most active web3 developer communities, and artists here were early to sell NFTs to an international audience when local buying power was thin. Gas on Ethereum mainnet fluctuates constantly and can turn a simple transfer into a multi-dollar expense during congestion. Layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base and Optimism carry the same assets far more cheaply. When withdrawing from an exchange, read the network menu slowly: sending ETH over the wrong chain, or paying ERC-20 gas for a small USDT move, are the two most common self-inflicted losses.
P2P safety, always: never release ETH before the fiat payment is confirmed inside your own bank app — screenshots can be faked. Use platform escrow, trade with high-rating counterparties, and treat any "pay outside the platform" request as the scam it is.
Getting a fair rate on your conversion
Before converting a small ETH amount, weigh the transfer cost against the transfer size — mainnet gas can quietly claim a big slice of a minor transaction.
